Physical Education

Ms Garcia

  Sacred Heart Physical Education Program

Hello everyone, welcome back,  I am Ms. Garcia.  I am in charge of the physical education program at SHCS. We are ready to begin our second year of PE and I am very excited. I graduated from CSUS Stanislaus State with my BA in physical education. I have been involved in the Patterson sports world for many years now. I coached recreation soccer; I helped with PHS girl’s soccer team for 3 years, coached basketball, softball and soccer at Creekside Middle School.  I have been privilege to have the opportunity to meet wonderful competitors within all the teams I have coached.  I love working with children and adolescents; they make coming to work easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Following are some objectives of our Physical Education Program:

·         To help our students keep physically fit by being active between 30 to 45 minutes every PE session.

·         To expose our students to a variety of team sports such as soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball and many others.

·         To expose our students to a variety of games such as tag, scooter ball, badminton, relay races, freeze tag, orienteering, and many others.

·         To help our students discover an activity that they excel and would want to continue as a life long activity.

·         To expose our students to leadership roles while doing warm-ups, during a game situation or simply because they have it in them.

·         To teach our students about what it takes to participate in an organized team sport and/or individual sport. Students will learn about life skills such as going to practice, being on time to practice, giving all you got every practice, wanting to be the best and helping others to be the best, listening to directions, discipline, responsibility, among other skills.

·         To teach our students about fair play and being a good sport leaning to be gracious and respectful when you win and when you lose.

A Day in Ms Garcia’s PE Class

The class begins with an 8 to 10 minute warm-up which includes: students jogging around the basketball court to get their muscles going and their heart pumping. Then they arrive back to the numbers; the particular leaders of that week go to the front of the class face the class and begin the stretching session.  Stretches go from head to toe with 10 counts 4 times each stretch.  After stretches there is some terminology given for the game or activity. There is also some time for questions and answers about the game. I introduce the activity verbally and give a demonstration and/or have students demonstrate for me.  The class will practice the skills between 15 to 20 minutes, bring back the class quick cool down get some feedback from the students and off they go.  The students are given permission to go the restroom and/or get a drink at anytime.

At times it may seem a little slow because I breakdown every sport by the essential skills that our students need to do the sport. It takes about 3 to 4 weeks to go through a sport first 2 to 3 weeks students practice the skills, the last week they play the sport at its fullest in tournament format. Last year we played soccer, flag football, basketball, scooter ball, softball, street hockey, kick-ball, dodge ball, and many indoor games and did the mile-run. This year we will be doing many of the same sports, games and hopefully we will include volley, badminton, and orienteering and class unity activities to the curriculum.  Well that is a little about me and SHCS physical education program if you have any questions and/or wish to leave a comment you are welcome to do so.
